Historical Overview of Bartow, Florida

Prehistoric Inhabitants

The beloved area that we now know as Bartow has been housing individuals for over 12,000 years. Its oldest known inhabitants were the Native American tribes called the Seminoles. These tribesmen survived using the natural resources that were available in the area for substance. 

Establishment of Fort Blount

Readding Blount and his family came to the area and established Fort Blount in October 1851. The fort was used as a stockade so that it could protect settlers. Since they were afraid of being attacked by the Seminole tribe. Later on, Fort Blount also became the starting point for the future settlement in the area. 

Polk County Formation

During the American Civil War, Polk County was officially established in 1861. However, even with this advancement, the area of Bartow suffered during the war. It hindered the growth and development of the area. 

Renaming to Bartow 

In 1867, the county commissioned to rename Fort Blout to Bartow. This was done in honor of General Francis S. Bartow. He was a brave Confederate officer who was the first person to die in the battle during the Civil War. This renaming of the fort also makes a significant difference in the town’s identity. 

Education Development

In 1887, they saw the opening of Summerlin Institute, which was the first brick schoolhouse south of Jacksonville. This school was founded by Jacob Summerlin, who was a cattle baron and a very influential landowner in the area. His institution played a major role in providing education to the legion. And, later on, the school evolved into Bartow High School.
