Historical Overview of Zephyrhills, Florida
Early Settlement and Name Changes
This hypnotic city that we now call Zephyrhills saw its first settler in 1882. These pioneers had named this area Abbott–and their early economy was based on lumber and turpentine industries. Which also helped in attracting the attention of otter settlers to the region.
In 1886, Simon J. Temple visited the area–and purchased 280.74 acres of land from the Florida Railway and Navigation Corporation. This was a big moment for this location since it also marked the beginning of other organized development in the area.
During all the development between the years 1890 to 1892. The settlement of Abbott(Zephyrhills) had briefly adopted the name Hegman. This was done in order to reflect the transient nature of the early community identities–but it quickly reverted back to Abbott.

A year later, in 1893. Abbott also became a recognized voting precinct. Showing its growth as a settlement, while also establishing a community hub. Moving forward three years later to 1896, the settlement changed its name again, this time to Abbott Station.

In 1909, Captain Howard B. Jeffries, a Civil War veteran, got fascinated by the location–and purchased 35,000 acres of land.
