Historical Overview of Winter Haven, Florida

Prehistory

The bustling city that we now call Winter Haven was originally inhabited by two tribes called Timucua and Calusa. These native Americans were thriving in the region until European colonization, which brought diseases and conflicts. These conflicts caused the tribes to lose a drastic number of their population.

19th Century Settlements

In the 1840s, The U.S. government started a survey of the area and began documenting its habitats. Among these explorers, there were two notable individuals. The first being, Henry Washington, who is known for mapping some parts of Polka County in 1843–followed by Dr. John Westcott, who is well-known for his comprehensive survey in 1849.

In the 1860s, the first European settlers arrived in the region. This arrival also caused a lot of conflict between the settlers and the tribes. During the Seminole Wars, the region was also marked in the conflict and involved leaders like Chipco, who were still resisting the U.S. expansion.

Development of the Town

As soon as 1883 came, so did the railroad that was built by Henry Haines. This spectacular development led to a significant boost in the city’s local commerce, as well as its settlement. Also, as a fun fact, at this time(1884), the area was initially called “Harris Corners.” This name was taken after the local merchant F.A.K. Harris, who built the first building in the downtown area.

After some time, the name was changed to Winter Haven because of the area’s pleasant climate. On the 22nd of June 1911, the area of Winter Haven was officially incorporated as a town. And after a few years, on the 27th of November, 1923. The town was reincorporated this time as a city, which reflected its growth and development.

Infrastructure and Economy

In 1915, the town of Winter Haven began constructing a series of canals that connected the Chain of Lakes. This development helped the area in transporting its citrus crops. This astonishing project was completed in the early 1920s and greatly impacted the town’s local agriculture.

At the start of the 20th century, the citrus industry became a cornerstone for the economy of Winter Haven. Because of the area’s favorable climate, the local farmers took this as an advantage and produced oranges and grapefruits. Which again helped significantly in boosting their economy and local agriculture.

Cultural Landmarks

George W. Jenkins opened (1930) the first-ever Publix supermarket in Winter Haven. This development also caused a significant push in the development of local retail in the city and set a domino effect for the supermarket chain’s expansion across Florida.

In 1936, Winter Haven also saw the exciting opening of Cypress Garden. It wasn’t just the first theme park of Winter Haven but of all of Florida. Cypress Garden was loved by locals for its stunning botanical gardens and thrilling skiing shows. This also brought a lot of attraction to the city from travelers and celebrities until its unfortunate closure in 2009.

Post-War Growth

After World War II, Winter Haven saw rapid growth both in its population and urban development. This post-war era also saw a rush of new residents, which then led to the construction of new houses that were constructed in different architectural styles–including Colonial Revival.

Modern Era

In October 2011, Legoland Florida was opened at the former site of  Cypress Gardens. This marvelous theme helped revitalize tourism in Winter Haven. It also incorporated elements of the historic gardens into its attractions, which beautifully blended history with modern entertainment.

Nowadays, people know Winter Haven for its amazingly diverse attractions, which includes a vibrant downtown, cultural events, and a strong community spirit, all centered around the city’s beautiful lakes and parks.
