Historical Overview of Wesley Chapel, Florida

Prehistoric Era

Before the arrival of Early settlers, the land we now call Wesley Chapel was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years. At the same time, archeologists have also found evidence in the area that suggests that there were settlements that go as far back as 10,000 BC. 

Early Settlement

In the 1840s, the area of Wesley Chapel saw the arrival of its early settlers. Which also included the Boyett(e), Gillett(e), Godwin, and Kersey families. These pioneers saw this land as an opportunity and started building their homesteads–as well as cultivating the land. 

Civil War Era

After the Civil War, a lot of new settlers started to come to Wesley Chapel, which also included the Stanleys and Coopers families. They played an important role in the overall growth of the community, especially during this period. 

Naming of Wesley Chapel

In 1878, this area was officially named Wesley Chapel, taken from the local Methodist church, which was itself named in honor of John Wesley–Who was the founder of Methodism. But before this, the area of Wesley Chapel was commonly known as Double Branch because of its two nearby creeks.

Construction of Postal Services

A number of post office operations had taken place in Wesley Chapel from 1897 to 1902. Among them, a post office was named “Wesley”. This development also showed the community’s need for communication and connection with other regions. 

Economic Development

With the arrival of the 20th century, Wesley Chapel saw economic growth. During this period  Wesley Chapel developed industries like lumber harvesting, turpentine production, and agriculture. At the same time, notable individuals like Reuben Barnes played a big role in improving the community by being influential ranchers. 

Infrastructure Improvements 

The 1940s were a pivotal point for Wesley Chapel–after the arrival of Luther Daniel Smith. He helped the suburb by bringing electricity to the area while also serving on the board of the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative. This remarkable advancement also brought better living conditions in the area. 

Transportation Developments

In 1956, with the construction of Highway 54 West Bridge–new gates were opened for Wesley Chapel. It made it easier for the residents of the area to travel to their neighboring communities while boosting their economic growth. 

A few years later, in the 1960s, the I-75 was constructed. It provided Wesley Chapel access to the much larger urban centers around it, like Tampa. This also helped the area in its rapid population growth and development. 

Community Institutions

With the arrival of 1971, The Double Branch Baptist Church built a new sanctuary, which also reflected the development of the community and the role local institutes can play in creating social cohesion. 

Incorporation Efforts

In 2003, the residents of Wesley Chapel made an effort to incorporate the area as a city. However, unfortunately, these plans did not see any results. 

Healthcare Expansion

2012 marked a big milestone for the residents of Wesley Chapel–with the opening of Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. This hospital provided the essential healthcare that the residents of the area needed while also increasing the local infrastructure of the suburb.
