Historical Overview of Tarpon Springs, Florida

Prehistoric Era

Over 500 years ago, the land of Tarpon Springs was inhabited by a group of native american tribes. Among them included the Timucua and Apalachee tribes. Archaeologist sites like the Safford Mound were able to reveal their burial practices and find artifacts from these early inhabitants. 

The First Settlers

In 1876, The first settlers to arrive in this area were A.W. Ormond and his daughter Mary. They saw the potential of the land and constructed a cabin near Spring Bayou. After three years, Mary Ormond suggested the name “Tarpon Springs,” which was inspired by the tarpon fishes she saw in the bayou. 

Development Begins

Hamilton Disston, a wealthy industrialist from Pennsylvania, purchased four million acres of land in Florida, including Tarpon Springs. His investment in the land also helped Florida from bankruptcy and became a pivotal point for the development of the area. 

During all this development, the Orange Belt Railway also arrived in Tarpon Springs. With its arrival,  Tarpons Springs saw quite a bit of growth while also attracting visitors. 

Incorporation

With only 52 residents, Tarpon Springs was officially incorporated into a city in 1887. This development also marked Tarpon Springs as the first city in Pinellas County. At the same time, it also marked the first step for the city’s development as a community. 

Sponge Industry Emergence 

During the early 1890s, John K. Cheney established the first sponge business in Tarpon Springs. It was his efforts that laid the groundwork for what would become a booming industry in the near future. By the end of the 1890s, tarpon springs became the biggest harvesting center for sponges–attracting both divers and entrepreneurs. 

Greek Immigration

With the sponge industry booming, John Cocoris brought Greek Divers from the Dodecanese Islands. They were selected by him to work in the sponge industry–because of their advanced diving skills. This flow of Greek immigration later established a vibrant Greek Community–which would later shape the cultural landscape of Tarpon Springs. 

Sponge Exchange Established

In 1907, Tarpon Springs established a Sponge Exchange to create auctions for the harvested sponges. This institute took part in regulating the prices, promoting fair trade with the industry, and leading the city to economic growth. However, in 1938, a red tide event devastated the local sponge population. This event led to economic challenges for both the fishermen and businesses that relied on the sponging. 

Cultural Heritage

During the early to mid-20th century, the Greek community of Tarpon Springs started to flourish. They started to establish restaurants, shops and cultural festivals that celebrated their heritage. In 1943, they also constructed the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. This cathedral reflected the Byzantine architectural style and served as the main worshiping hub for the local Greek community. 

Historical Recognition

In 1990, the downtown district of Tarpon Spring was designated as a National Historic District. This recognition was aimed at preserving the land’s architectural heritage and cultural significance, which also included the homes surrounding the area.
