Historical Overview of Sarasota Springs, Florida
Early Settlement and Exploration
The beloved area that we now know as Sarasota appeared on a Spanish map and was labeled as “Zarazote.” This name could be linked to the daughter of Hernando de Soto’s daughter. There are also speculations that it was driven from a Calusa term. Which was translated to “an area of land easily observed.”
In 1851, William H. Whitaker came to the area. He was the first known white settler in the area and received a land grant that was around 144.81 acres on Sarasota Bay. William constructed a log cabin – which was named “Yellow Bluffs.” This development was the start of the non-Indigenous habitations in the region.
Civil War Era and Community Formation
During the Civil War in 1865, Whitaker’s cabin was burned down. This action was taken by the Seminole Raiders and was the cause for the relocation of him and his family. This event also highlighted the tumultuous nature of the early settlement in the area.
