Historical Overview of Safety Harbor, Florida

Prehistoric Era

This stunning location, now known as Safety Harbor, was originally inhabited by a chiefdom known as “The Tocobaga Indians”. This group of individuals originally flourished around Tampa Bay, Florida. The Tocobaga Indians made use of the area’s rich natural resources and established the first-ever town in the area of Safety Harbor. 

Spanish Exploration

Panfilo de Narvaez, a Spanish explorer, visited the land of Florida in 1527. His expedition led to him landing near the present-day location now known as St. Petersburg. During this time, Narvaez was able to come in contact with the people of Tocobaga. This encounter marked the first-ever contact between the Europeans and the natives of this land.  

In 1539, the Spanish explorer known as Hernando de Soto came to the area. Hernando’s visit was inspired by the legendary Fountain of Youth, which he thought was located in this area. Even though he was not able to find the legendary fountain, he named the location  Espiritu Santo Springs. 19th Century Settlement

In 1842, a non-native settler known as Odet Philippe acquired one hundred and sixty acres of land in Safety Harbour. He was known as the first-ever permanent resident. Not only that, he also played a major role in introducing citrus cultivation and cigar making in the area. With this development, the area saw significant growth in its economy and development. Leading to the establishment of a thriving and growing community. 

Incorporation and Growth
