Early 20th Century Development

Ransom E. Olds, the founder of the Oldsmobile automobile brand, came to Tampa Bay in 1916. He purchased approximately 37,541 acres of land north of Tampa Bay. Ransom envisioned this area to house a community that would cater to affluent residents and named the area “R.E. Olds-on-the-Bay”.

The Wayside Inn was constructed in 1917 and opened its doors to potential visitors in the area. It was the first hotel in Oldsmar and served Ransom E. Olds and his wife as inaugural guests. At the same time, the same year saw the construction of essential infrastructure, which included a post office, a general store and a bank. These big developments acted as the groundwork for laying down a foundation for community life.

Challenges and Setbacks

On October the 27th–1921, A destructive hurricane struck the area of Oldsmar. This unfortunate event led to extensive flooding and destruction. At the time, the town’s population was around 200. After the storm was over, the aftermath led to damaged homes and businesses–resulting in a major setback for the fledgling community.

However, even after this devastating event,. Ransom E. Olds still continued to invest in the town. He started oil drilling in the area that we now know as Tampa Bay Downs racetrack. But unfortunately, this venture ultimately didn’t lead anywhere, which stopped any productive result.

Transition and Name Changes

In 1923, the area’s growth had stagnated. This led to Ransom E. Olds began to liquidate his assets in the area. He trades the nearly complete racetrack for the Fort Harrison Hotel in Clearwater. Plus, other properties which he sold at a considerable financial loss.

The opening of Gandy Bridge in 1924 led to more downfall for the area. This route provided transportation between Tampa and St. Petersburg. Because of this, the traffic was diverted from Oldsmar–which then further hindered the growth of the area.

A few years later–in 1927, another attempt was made to revitalise the area. A man named Harry A. Prettyman visited Oldsmar and promoted various gimmicks–which included Gold Rushes. However, later on, he was caught selling underwater lots. This led to a scandal, which then led to a name change for the area from Oldsmar to Tampa Shores.

Return to Roots

After years of financial struggles and a whole lot of negative publicity–the town was officially reverted to its original name. This change also became the first stepping stone for the efforts to reclaim the area’s heritage–since Ransom E. Olds sold his last holding in the area.

Community Revitalization

In 1960, the Oldsmar Little Major League was established by Charlie Fadeley. This small development led to a resurgence in the community spirit and engagement in youth writing in the town. It also played a vital role in creating a sense of local pride. And lead to the involvement of residents in the area–forming a community bond.
