Early Settlement

The area that we now call Ocoee saw its first settlers in the mid-1800s. Among these included Dr. J.D. Starke as well as a group of slaves — who were suffering from malaria. Furthermore, they established a camp near Starke Lake, which allowed them access to clean water. As well as a source of commute to work near Lake Apopka.

Development

Ocoee saw the establishment of its first school in 1880 — which was initially a three-sided hut on Floral Street. Furthermore, in 1881, William Blakely arrived in Ocoee and quickly became an influential figure for the residents of Ocoee. He took part in many important roles in the area, including a teacher, postmaster, and justice of the peace.

Founding

In 1883, Captain Bluford Sims got a land grant for 74 acres of land west of Strake Lake. Which would later become part of downtown Ocoee. 

In 1886, the town was platted by Dr. H.K. Clarke, Charles J. Chunn, and R.B.F. Roper under the name “Ocoee.” This name was inspired by a river in Tennessee with roots in Cherokee meaning “apricot vine place.” Additionally, Captain Sims also played an important role during this process. 

Economic Growth

After the arrival of the Florida Midland Railroad — Ocoee saw significant growth in its population as well as economy.
