Historical Overview of Lakeland, Florida

Early Settlement and Incorporation

• At the start of the 1870s. European-American settlers from Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina started arriving in the area of Lakeland. These settlers were attracted by the land’s fertile souls–which were ideal for agriculture and citrus farming. 
• While the land was seeing great growth, in 1882, Abraham Munn purchased 80 acres of land in the area, which is now called downtown Lakeland. He played a big role in establishing the town since he had successfully lobbied for the South Florida Railroad, which made Lakeland a stopping point for its route. 
• Then, in 1883, the first freedmen railway workers started to settle in the area. This contributed greatly to the development of the African-American neighborhood called Moorehead. Moving forward, in 1885, Lakeland was officially incorporated as a town, and Munn was selected as its leader. Because of this development, the community of Lakeland saw rapid growth, quickly becoming Florida’s third-largest city by 1899.

Infrastructure and Development

• In 1891, the Lakeland Light and Power Company installed the town’s first electric light plant. This helped the town to be counted on the list of few towns in Florida that had electricity. 
• During the Spanish-American War in 1898. Over 9,000 troops were stationed in Lakeland. Among those troops also included the 10th Cavalry Regiment, who are more well-known as The Buffalo Soldiers. This occupation also had a significant impact on the local development and the culture around it. 
• By the time 1901 came around. Lakeland was holding its first bond election, and it was to help fund the construction of a school building. This was also the first stepping stone for the community’s commitment to education. At the same time, Park Trammell was selected as the mayor of the town and then later on also served as the governor and U.S. senator. 
• In 1902, the first telephone exchange was made in the city, which helped immensely in increasing their communication in the growing community. The town also increased its public safety in 1908 by organizing its first fire department. A few years later, in 1912, they also integrated free mail delivery–which helped the town improve its postal services for the residents. 

Growth and Cultural Development

• When 1913 came around, the government of the city had changed from an aldermanic to a commission form of governance. This development allowed the town to have a more structured local administration. After two more years, the town reached a cornerstone. In 1915, the town of Lakeland laid its first hospital–which also addressed the healthcare needs of the growing population. 
• By 1922, Florida Southern College relocated from Sutherland to Lakeland. This astonishing relocation also played a big role in increasing the educational landscape of the city. Moreover, it also contributed to developing Lakeland’s culture. 

The Florida Land Boom

• During the Florida Land Boom in the 1920s, Lakeland also saw a great boom in its construction projects, which included the construction of some of the most notable buildings from this era. Among these projects included the Terrace Hotel (1924), Palace Theater (1925), and Marble Arcade (1926).
• While at the same time between the years 1923 and 1927. The baseball team, Cleveland Indians held their spring training in Lakeland–which naturally also attracted baseball fans and helped increase the city’s local tourism. 

Continued Growth and Notable Events

• After a few more years, in 1934. The Detroit Tigers also began their spring training in Lakeland. However, unlike Cleveland Indians, this relationship has continued for decades and has become a big part of the city’s identity. 
• Four years later(1938), The renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright started designing the structure for Florida Southern College at the request of President Ludd Spivey. This complicated project included 18 planned buildings–among which 12 were completed in over two decades. This also showed his signature style. 

World War II Impact

In 1940, The Lodwick School of Aeronautics was opened in Lakeland. It helped in training thousands of pilots for the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Lodwick also played a critical role in supporting the war efforts while also contributing greatly to the city’s economy.  

Present Day

In the present day, Lakeland continues to grow rapidly and has shown significant development–such as its sixth and largest solar energy farm. That is taking over 450 acres of land near the site of Florida Polytechnic University.
