Historical Overview of Inverness, Florida

Early Settlement 

In the late 1860s, Alfred Tompkins — a 35-year-old Civil War veteran, settled into the area. In 1868, A.D. Tompkins established Tompkinsville, a predecessor to the Inverness we know today. Later on, Tompkins built a sawmill as well as set up a mail service to attract potential settlers. 

Frank Dampier, Tompkins’ brother-in-law, sees the potential of the area and constructs a general store. Furthermore, the area’s economy at the time revolved around logging, citrus farming, and phosphate mining.

Formation and Growth

In June 1887, the area became part of the newly formed Citrus County after splitting from Hernando County. At the same time, Alfred Tompkins serves on the first county commission — shaping early local governance.

In the late 1880s, the town’s population grew to around 250 people. This was due to the booming logging industry in the area. In the 1890s, the area saw the arrival of a Jacksonville company. They purchased the town and promised to build a new courthouse in the area. During the development, the town was renamed to Inverness. The name was inspired by a location in Scotland with a similar name — due to the lakes resembling Scottish lochs.

County Seat Controversy and Incorporation

In 1891, Inverness won a heated battle against Mannfield and became the permanent county seat. After this development, a dramatic midnight raid occurs — with country officials moving all government records and fixtures from Mannfield to Inverness.

The series of events solidified Inverness’s position as the center of Citrus County’s government as well as commerce. On the 6th of March 1919, Inverness was officially incorporated as a city. Hence marking a new era for the local governance and the city’s development. 

20th Century Developments

In 1961, the city gained national attention. This was due to the fact that the area’s historical courthouse was used to film a scene for Elvis Presley’s movie “Follow That Dream”. Moreover, Inverness saw steady growth throughout the 20th century. Alongside balancing development with the preservation of the area’s natural beauty as well as its historic charm. 

In 1995, Inverness was recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and the US Forest Service. This highlighted the area’s commitment to urban forestry.

In 2009, Inverness was named “City of the Year” by the Fourth and Eight. It is a national veterans’ organization — that recognizes the city’s support for veterans as well as community service.
