Settlement and Naming

In 1876, Charles Reaves, a settler from Georgia, arrived in the area. While establishing his community and surveying the area he saw the abundance of fruit in the area – particularly the oranges. This inspired him to name the community “Fruitville.” Furthermore, Reaves also became the first postmaster – adding to the establishment of the community identity. 

Education and Infrastructure Development

In 1887, the community of Fruitville saw the establishment of its first cemetery. It is built on land that was donated by the Florida Mortgage and Investment Company of Scotland. This progress marked a significant development in allowing the residence to have a final resting place. 

Furthermore, Raves and his wife, Martha Tatum Reaves – converted their corn crib into the area’s first-ever school. Hiring Miss Josie Clower as the first teacher for the school. Allowing them to lay the groundwork for better education in the growing community.

In 1918, the area saw the establishment of Franklin Field – an airfield that was named after Mayor George Franklin. It served as a backup landing area for the U.S. Army Air Service during World War I. In 1941, in response to the needs of the growing population – findings from the Works Progress Administration led to the construction of Fruitville Elementary School.
