Historical Overview of Dade City, Florida

Early Beginnings

The area we now know as Dade City has a significant mark in Florida’s Military History. In 1835, this area was the site of the Dade Battle – during the Second Seminole War. Moreover, it is also known as the location where the U.S. Army Major Francis L. Dade and many of his men were killed. 

In 1842, James Gibbons got a permit for 160 acres of land in the region. It was one of the earliest land transitions as well as the starting point for future settlements and development.  

Development and Incorporation

In 1855, the area saw the construction of a bridge that went across the Withlacoochee River. It was constructed by slaves who were owned by James Lanier and allowed for better transportation and accessibility. 

During the 1870s and 1880s, a settlement called Fort Dade was established near the area. However, it was later relocated because of the development of a railroad. Which later on became a major source of trade and transportation.  

A few years later, the local community adopted the name Dade City. Moreover, the already established Hatton post office was also renamed on December 18, 1884. At the same time, Dade City was officially incorporated.

In 1899, the Tampa Tribune became a successful cigar factory in Dade City. Hence showcasing the city’s economic development and diverse industry during this time period. 

Modern Era
