Historical Overview of Crystal River, Florida

Prehistoric Era

The Crystal River that we know today was first inhabited by a group of Native Americans, from the Deptford culture. These tribes had built their settlements along the Crystal River and survived using the area’s natural resources. Moreover, this site is now known as the Crystal River Archaeological State Park and features burial mounds and ceremonial structures. 

Early European Contact

After the arrival of Columbus in 1492, this region began to see European influence – with settlements being made in the neighboring areas. However, this area remained largely untouched for centuries. 

19th Century Settlement

In 1842, the Armed Occupation Act caused settlers to move into the area — after the Second Seminole War. In fact, Twenty two men filed for land patents in Crystal River, leading to increased settlements in the area. 

A year later, Crystal River became part of Hernando County after its establishment. In 1844, the county’s name changed to Bento but was reverted back to Hernando in 1850.

Post-Civil War Growth

In the late 1800s, after the Civil War. Crystal River began to attract settlers because of its mild climate and potential for citrus farming. Furthermore, wild citrus trees were already flourishing in the area — due to the seeds that were discarded by the Spanish explorers. 

From 1894 to 1895, the “Big Freeze” devastated the local citrus grove, impacting the area’s economy significantly. 

Industrial Development

In 1882, James Williams brought his Cedar mill in the area. It produced pencil boards and contributed greatly to the local economy. Furthermore, it also became a significant employer in the area.  

In 1889, Phosphate was discovered in Citrus County. This progress led to the development of the phosphate industry, which only lasted till WW I. 

Transportation and Tourism

In 1888, the area saw the arrival of the railroad facilities. This made it easier to transport goods and attract tourists, as well as increasing local commerce. In 1903, Crystal River was officially incorporated as a town — making it a significant milestone in its development. 

20th Century Changes

In 1923, the area was incorporated as a city. This further highlighted the area’s status as a community with a growing economic and social structure. In 1990, The Crystal River Mall opened north of downtown — but since has been closed down.
