Historical Overview of Clermont, Florida

Early Inhabitants and European Colonization

The beloved area that we now know as Clermont was first inhabited by a group of indigenous people called The Timucua. Among these individuals included Urriparacoxi — who was a chieftain during Hernando de Soto’s expeditions from 1539 to  1540. 

Moreover, the Timucua were skilled hunters and farmers but suffered a great number of losses. This was due to the fact that  European settlers had arrived in the area and caused diseases to be spread. 

After the decline of the Timucua — because of the diseases as well as conflicts the Seminole people moved into the region. Later On, In 1819, Florida was bought by the United States from Spain through the Adams–Onís Treaty.

Conflict and Settlement

From 1814 to 1858, The U.S. government tried to relocate the Native American tribes westward during this time period. This caused a lot of conflict between the two and led to a war known as the Seminole Wars. A Notable figure involved in this conflict was Osceola — he was a prominent leader and resisted the relocation efforts.

During the 1830s, a lot of the Seminoles were forced out or relocated. This event was later known as the Trail of Tears. Afterward, when the conflicts ended — white settlers began to arrive in the area in 1853. This also led to further hostility with the Native American tribes. 

Founding and Development

In 1884, A.F. Wrotnowski founded Clermont — a manager of Clermont Improvement Company. He named the area after his French birthplace. On June 9th, 1891, the area was incorporated into a town but was disbanded on May 25th, 1895. This was due to many different factors, from financial difficulties to the lack of infrastructure available at the time. 

Reincorporation and Growth

On December 28th, 1916, Clermont was re-incorporated as a city. Moreover, after its reincorporation, particularly around World War II and onwards — the area saw a growth in the Citrus Industry. At the same time, Edward Denslow established The Postal Colony Company. The company was aimed at developing citrus groves for retired postal workers — which also made Clermont one of America’s leading citrus-growing towns.

Modern Developments

In 1956, the area saw the development of a significant tourist attraction called “The Florida Citrus Tower.” This tower aided a lot in the economic growth of the area as well as acting as a landmark for Clermont.
