Early Exploration and Settlement
In 1539, Hernando de Soto landed at Shaw’s Point with his 620 men and nine ships. This arrival marked the beginning of European exploration in the area. De Soto and his fellow expedition traveled through the land that we now know as Florida – which also lead to the indigenous populations in the area.

In 1842, Two brothers named Joseph and Hector Braden from Tallahassee related to the Manatee River area. They had lost their plantations during the Money Panic of 1837. During a storm, Hector Braden was attempting to cross the Manatee River and unfortunately drowned.
This event left a significant impact on Joseph Branden causing a hindrance in the establishment of a successful plantation. In 1850, Joseph Braden constructed The Branded Castle. It was a fortified plantation house that also served as a refuge during the conflicts – especially during the Seminole Wars. In 1903, Bradenton was officially incorporated as a city, and A.T. Cornwall was elected as the first mayor.
