Historical Overview of Bayshore Gardens, Florida

Early Development

Before 1906, the area that we now know as Bayshore Gardens was used as land for farming–particularly tomato farming. However, in 1906, the area was selected and initiated for development.

Mid-20th Century Transformation

A New York syndicate led by developer Sydney R. Newman came to the area and purchased around 3,200 acres of property. This purchase was made with approximately $2 million in 1955. Moreover, this acquisition also marked the highest price for land in the region–since the 1920s, also marking the beginning of a major transformation for the farmland and residential community in the area.

The arrival of 1956 also saw the official public opening of Bayshore Gardens. During this period four homes were constructed – while also showcasing different architectural styles. The first house that was sold was in Hibiscus style and was purchased by Hennie and Samuel Gibson. Thus symbolizing the start of residential life in the area and the growth of the community.

Rapid Growth and Community Development

In 1958, around 400 homes were built in Bayshore Gardens. These fantastique homes were designed by Sidney Wilkinson and constructed by Richard Morton’s Bayshore Gardens Inc. This development then attracted the attention of developers–which also included Richmond Homes and Arrow Home Builders. This appeal was a big turning point for the area’s growth and development.

With this fast development and just a year later–the area saw the opening of The Bayshore Gardens Shopping Center. This stunning shopping mall features all the essential stores, from retail shops like Publix to a variety of service shops. Furthermore, this shopping center also played a crucial role in creating a sense of community and convention for the residents.

At the same time, the shopping center was also expanding–allowing it to include additional stores and a movie theatre. With the increase in local amenities, the Bayshore Gardens was able to attract more families to the area.
